Clay soils can sometimes be difficult to plant trees in because of problems like iron chlorosis, which appears as a conspicuous yellowing of leaves. Watering your trees correctly when planted in clay soil is especially important because many times the trees are over watered as the clay holds in moisture. Our first choices for planting in clay soils are:
Northern Catalpa
Common Hackberry
Cockspur Hawthorn
Winter King Hawthorn
Washington Hawthorn
Crusader Hawthorn
Patmore Ash
Marshall Seedless Ash
Golden Raintree
Lanceleaf Cottonwood
Plains Cottonwood
Bur Oak
English Oak
Silver Maple
Skyline Honeylocust
Shademaster Honeylocust
Colorado Spruce
Ponderosa Pine
While the above trees give you a good start, there are many other trees that will do well in Colorado’s clay soils. But to be safe, the trees listed above are a good choice.
