This reed grass is a vertical masterpiece and provides wonderful contrast amongst low shrubs and perennials. Often used in naturalized areas, its ultimate size is directly related to the amount of moisture. Even though Calamagrostis can grow in fresh-water bogs, it also does well in drier areas.
Miscanthus purpurascens will show its true fall colors (brilliant orange-red) when grown in areas with warm sunny summers. Very hardy - survives the bitterly cold winters of the Canadian Prairies, though it does not necessarily bloom every year. The most important consideration when growing Flame grass is to make sure that it receives ample moisture. This is especially true in hot dry locations.
This is one of the finest-textured Maiden Grass cultivars. Slender leaves originate in a clump, spreading out and up like a fountain. It bears pink, tiny flowers in late summer and fall which can be used fro drying. Fall color is tannish brown.
