The October Glory Red Maple tree is one of the best and most popular of the Red Maple cultivars. October Glory Red Maple trees are excellent for intense fall color and have a medium to fast growth rate. This particular cultivar colors quite late in the fall, usually around October and November as opposed to the September-coloring Autumn Blaze Maples. This Red Maple is an excellent tree for lawn or street planting.

Species name of rubrum (meaning red) is everywhere in evidence: red flowers in dense clusters in late March to early April (before the leaves appear), red fruit (initially reddish, two-winged samara), reddish stems and twigs, red buds, and, in the fall, orange-red foliage color. This maple tree grows faster than Norway and Sugar maples, but slower than the Silver maple. Sap of this tree can be used to make a maple syrup that is inferior in quality to syrups made from the sugar maple. Red Maple trees are widely planted and admired.

The Autumn Flame is a fast growing tree that is also one of the first trees to show fall color. The Autumn Flame Red Maple has scarlet/green leaves which make for gorgeous fall color. This deciduous trees leaves will always contain a hint of scarlet. It will grow in low lands and can handle excessive moisture. The Autumn Flame Red Maple is pyramidal when young with ascending branches. The branches develop low and form a dense, narrow crown. The lobed leaves are a nice bright green. It requires full sun for best effect. It is not tolerant of drought or very hot dry weather. This tree is a large tree that can achieve a trunk size of three to five feet in diameter. This is truly a beautiful shade tree.

This is a fast-growing, upright tree with very attractive silver-gray bark. This tree tolerates heat better than the columnar Sugar Maple or the columnar Norway Maple. This Maple has a nice red, orange, and/or yellow fall color that lasts several weeks and is often one of the first trees to color up in autumn. If you’re looking for a large, but narrow, red Maple, this one is excellent.

The Pacific Sunset is an excellent and smaller, but brilliantly colored, red maple tree. Before the leaves emerge, small cluster of pale yellow flowers appear. Outstanding glossy, dark green summer foliage changes to tints of red, yellow, and orange in the fall. Pacific Sunset colors a little earlier in the fall. Branch structure is finer textured and more spreading, resulting in a more rounded crown.

Japanese Maples can be hard to grow in Colorado, but if you have that special, protected spot, they can do well. (Needs protection from winds and needs to be planted in an area where frost is not a huge issue in the winter—close to the house, preferably.) The Green Mountain Sugar Maple is a very handsome deciduous tree with leathery leaves. This showy tree is upright and oval in shape. This tree is noted for its improved performance in dry restricted growing areas such as areas close to pavement. The Green Mountain carries all of the characteristics of the Sugar Maple with the strong limbs and the gorgeous, but varying fall color (Yellow, Orange, and Red) and the seeds are inconspicuous and causes no significant litter problems.

The Silver Maple is often used in residential areas for shade because of its thick foliage and fast growth. Its leaves are deeply cut and silvery white underneath. They appear as light green and turn to yellow in the fall. This deciduous maple tree provides very dense shade. Fall color is a golden yellow.
